Is it stupid to take Aramaic?

I am going to major in Computer Science/Engineering when I begin my undergraduate studies in California next year. I asked my mother if I may take the Aramaic language series, and she told me no, because it is stupid and economically irrelevant. She questioned my maturity and judgment because of my inquiry. Would it be harmful to my future or a waste of my time there to take these classes? I am paying for it, by the way, with a combination of federal aid and some minimal, low interest loans.
