Why do people say 'like' in their sentences these days?

The word itself is irrelevant to the meaning of the sentence, but the need to "buy" a second to think is not irrelevant. Using "like" frequently suggests that the person may have difficulty articulating thoughts smoothly. Understandable, I think. Don't hate.
